Australian Battery Performance Standard - Project Update

We need your feedback – Battery Performance Standard

DNV GL, CSIRO, the Smart Energy Council and Deakin University have developed a draft Australian Battery Performance Standard and Best Practice Guideline and we need your feedback.

A link to download a copy of the draft of both the Battery Performance Standard and the Best Practice Guideline can be found at the bottom of this page.

Feedback on both documents is important because it is intended that the Best Practice Guideline be used by battery manufacturers and system integrators from June 2020 until an Australian Battery Performance Standard is finalised.

Australian Battery Performance Standard Project

The objective of this ARENA and Victorian Government co-funded project is to produce a draft Performance Standard for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) connected to domestic/small commercial PV systems.

The Draft Standard will comprise a series of performance testing protocols and performance-metric reporting methods for manufacturers and system integrators.

The development of the proposed Standard was based on the need identified for manufacturers of battery storage equipment to test and report the performance metrics of their products in a standardised manner. This is to ensure that end-users are better informed regarding the expected performance of a BESS, in order to compare systems on a like-for-like basis.

The proposed Standard has two main aims:

1. To define how the tests are to be undertaken to determine each performance metric, including the environmental conditions; and

2. To define how the results from the testing are to be reported.

The Australian Battery Performance Standard project is being managed by DNV GL. The other consortium members are CSIRO, Deakin University and the Smart Energy Council. The project is supported by a Stakeholder Reference Group that includes battery manufacturers, industry associations, relevant government agencies/bodies, end-users, Standards Australia, the Victorian Government (DELWP) and ARENA.

The project is scheduled to be completed in mid-June, with a draft Standard submitted to Standards Australia, who will then undertake their own formal consultation process.

it is intended that the Best Practice Guideline be used by battery manufacturers and system integrators from June 2020 until an Australian Battery Performance Standard is finalised.
